Road Rules Awareness Week 2024

Busways is encouraging everyone to refresh their knowledge of road rules during Road Rules Awareness Week, which runs from 19 to 25 August this year.

With nearly 1,350 buses operating across our network in 2024, this week provides a perfect reminder about road safety in your community, particularly regarding bus safety and commonly misunderstood road rules.

Many people believe they understand road rules, but a refresher on commonly misunderstood rules can play a crucial role in reducing road accidents. For more information, visit the Road User Handbook.

Busways' Steven Hawkins, Head of NSW Service Delivery, highlights the importance of safety around buses: “Buses are large, heavy vehicles that cannot stop quickly. Motorists need to avoid cutting in front of buses and must give way when buses are merging into traffic. Pedestrians should remain alert and watch for buses, and passengers must hold on while the bus is moving.”

Steven also noted, “Over the past 12 months, there have been more than 170 avoidable safety incidents involving buses in Western Sydney*. Penrith has seen 24 percent of these incidents, with common issues including passengers not holding on while traveling, heavy braking due to cars cutting in front of buses, and passengers tripping while boarding or alighting.”

When on the road, please remember:

  • That buses are large, heavy vehicles that cannot stop quickly,
  • To give way to buses,
  • To slow down to 40km/h when bus lights flash, and
  • To hold on while travelling and to remain seated until the bus stops.

Together we can make our roads safer for everyone.
