Busways is letting customers know that we’ve joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative (HDSI). This globally recognised program aims to provide support for individuals with non-visible disabilities, allowing them to seek assistance without disclosing personal information.

We’re initially launching this on our Adelaide services where most of our team have completed HDSI training. This will soon roll out in NSW locations also.

Understanding the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative

The HDSI is designed to create a more supportive environment for individuals with hidden disabilities—such as autism, anxiety disorders, and chronic pain conditions. By wearing a sunflower lanyard or badge, individuals can communicate their needs to staff and the public, fostering understanding and assistance.

A Commitment to Safety and Support

At Busways, our goal is to ensure that everyone using our services feels safe, supported, and confident while traveling. By implementing this initiative, we aim to enhance the experience of all passengers and make our transport services more accessible.

Recently, our Adelaide team launched the initiative at the Disabilities Aging and Lifestyle Expo, where we engaged with attendees and gathered valuable insights from individuals living with disabilities.

One visitor said the Sunflower initiative really helped her and she was pleased to see it coming on Busways buses.  “I wear the Sunflower because I suffer from anxiety and when I travel by bus, I really need the assistance of having the front seat due to motion sickness that comes from the anxiety. It’s great that the Busways drivers will now know to ask me if I need extra help, without me having to say so up front.”

Expanding the Initiative Across All Regions

Launching initially in Adelaide, Busways is currently in the process of training our teams on the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative across all our regions. By implementing this program, we hope to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone who travels with us.

We invite our communities to get involved and help us spread awareness. If you’re interested in learning more about the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative or how you can participate, please visit our website, or reach out to us directly.

Together, we can foster an accessible and welcoming environment for all travellers, ensuring that every journey with Busways is a positive experience.
