Driving safety at Busways with new technology and employee engagement

As National Safe Work Month comes to an end, Busways remains fully committed to safety and takes this opportunity to reflect on significant progress made and actions taken to ensure a safer environment for everyone.

Busways Safety Manager Jo Edwards explains that over the past year, Busways safety team focused on three core pillars: educating, engaging, and acting.

"Our safety strategy was driven by these principles, ensuring that we stayed proactive in maintaining a safe working environment,” Ms Edwards said.

A key highlight of this month were the ‘SafeTea’ morning tea sessions held across five Busways depots in NSW and Southern Australia. These provided a platform for our depot teams to share their ideas, and suggestions for improving workplace safety.

Ms Edwards extended a heartfelt thank you to all employees who took part.

“It was fantastic to connect with drivers, yard staff, mechanics, trade assistants, cleaners, trainers, new trainees, mentor drivers, panel shop crew, apprentices, admin, and managers -- all coming together to talk safety,” she explains.

“These valuable conversations have provided meaningful insights to help with the ongoing efforts to strengthen our safety culture and steer our WHS strategy, underpinned by data from our new state-of-the-art incident management system implemented this year.

“We're currently analysing the results of a recent pilot survey we conducted to identify specific work related hazards that could lead to psychosocial or musculoskeletal injuries and will be developing an action plan from that."

Busways safety team also attended the SA Health and Safety Conference in October, an energising discussion platform highlighting the importance of close collaboration between departments for effective risk management.

As National Safe Work Month concludes, Busways remains committed to safety as a constant priority.

“We will maintain our focus on building a safe, supportive environment where safety is an everyday collective responsibility for everyone. Busways’ safety vision is for everyone to return home safe and healthy every day,” Ms Edwards said.
