Council engagement improves infrastructure for buses in SA

Adelaide Metro Outer South bus operated by Busways

As part of Busways ongoing council engagement program, Busways is working closely with the Adelaide's City of Onkaparinga to resolve key issues affecting bus operations across the Adelaide Metro Outer South region.  The work targets safety improvements, accessibility, and service reliability for passengers and drivers alike.

The proactive collaboration has resulted in many improvements to address issues impacting passengers and ensure that public transport remains safe, accessible, and reliable.

“We would like to thank City of Onkaparinga for being responsive to our feedback and prioritising safety and infrastructure improvements that will benefit both drivers and passengers across the region,” said Neil Henderson, General Manager Busways South Australia.

"Our program of engagement with local governments across Busways operating regions is important and ongoing work that not only helps improve the safety and comfort on our services, and make our driver's jobs easier and it also keeps our fleet on the road by reducing body shop and mechanical repairs that can be caused by infrastructure issues, like bottoming out at intersections or damage from hitting over hanging trees," Mr Henderson said.

Key SA improvements:

Below is a list of just some of the more than 25 improvements completed, with many more planned to come:

  • Bus Stop 98 Accessibility: At the newly upgraded Bus Stop 98, drivers reported that wheelchair-bound passengers could not access the bus pad due to the lack of a proper ramp. Council has committed to installing a ramp to ensure better access for all passengers.
  • School Bus Stop Concerns: Onkaparinga City Council is addressing ongoing issues at the Bains Road Woodcroft school bus stop and Alexander Kelly Drive loading zone. Increased patrols around school times are planned to ensure better access for school services and to ease congestion during peak hours.
  • Bains Road and Old Coach Road Upgrades: Both Bains Road and Old Coach Road in Woodcroft are slated for upgrades in 2024, which will include surface repairs, new footpaths, and bus stop indents. These improvements are expected to streamline bus operations and enhance passenger safety.
  • Upcoming Road Safety Upgrades: Several major road safety upgrades are in the works, including improvements to roundabouts and intersections in key areas like States Road and Old Reynella Interchange. These projects are expected to reduce delays and improve the overall travel experience for passengers and drivers.
  • Tree Trimming: Low-hanging tree branches in Kalgoorlie Avenue, Sand Road and Port Noarlunga which pose a risk to buses, have been prioritized by Council for pruning to prevent potential damage to fleet vehicles.
