Busways' new Western Sydney contract begins
On Sunday 10 December 2023, Busways will begin a new contract to continue operating bus services in Western Sydney for the next seven years.
Customers can rest assured that it will be business as usual from day one, with smooth continuation of services delivering the same timetable that was recently introduced on 20 November 2023.
Since the new contract announcement in February, Busways in collaboration with Transport for NSW has meticulously executed a transition project to ensure uninterrupted service quality.
Under the new contract, Busways continues to operate over 350 buses from the Penrith, Blacktown, and Mulgrave bus depots. This includes 18 eco-friendly zero emissions buses in Penrith and the award-winning Cooee Busways on demand service in The Ponds area, serving 8 million passengers on nearly 1.1 million bus trips annually.
Managing Director Byron Rowe said Busways has a proven track record in delivering high standards of customer experience, safety, and service innovation to the Western Sydney community since starting in Blacktown in 1942.
“We are now the largest 100 percent Australian-owned bus operator in Sydney and our commitment is to deliver world-class bus passenger services to the Western Sydney community over the next seven years,” Mr Rowe said.
“We will focus on investing in the region, improving customer experience, introducing efficiencies, adopting new technologies and appropriately growing services as Western Sydney evolves into Sydney's second major hub.”
Busways looks forward to a continued positive collaboration with the NSW Government to provide customer value and innovate public transport accessibility. Over the past decade, Busways has partnered with Transport for NSW to lead 40 timetable enhancements. Busways has invested significantly in the Western Sydney network, with projects like smart depots, zero-emissions buses including six new ZEBs in the last year and the establishment of Sydney’s most popular On-Demand service in 2019.
Busways was awarded the new contract following a competitive open tender process in 2022.
